Can I remain a member of my Chamber of Physicians if I go abroad?
The conditions of membership of the State Chambers of Physicians are set out in the state laws governing the healthcare profession and the activities of the State Chambers (Heilberufekammergesetzen) and the regulations on registration (Meldeordnungen) of the State Chambers of Physicians themselves. These vary from state to state, however there is a possibility in some states of retaining voluntary membership whilst abroad.
It is advisable to contact the State Chamber of Physicians where you are a member before you leave the country in order to find out if temporary membership is available, and if so the conditions and ways of application. One advantage of temporary membership is that it makes it easier to obtain information about the accreditability of periods of speciality training carried out abroad. This can be particularly helpful if intending to take the final speciality examination upon return to Germany.
